MVB | Efficient night gets Wesmen back in the win column

Box Score

CALGARY — Another efficient night meant another Winnipeg Wesmen win on the road.

The UWinnipeg men's volleyball team hit .346 and put up 40 digs to come from behind and drop the Mount Royal Cougars 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-17) in a Canada West conference match Friday night.

It was the third time in the past five matches the Wesmen hit at least .340 as a team and it moved their record to 12-9 on the season with one match to play.

The Wesmen are looking likely to head to UBC as the 6-seed for the first round of the playoffs. A Calgary win at UBC-Okanagan would secure the 5-seed for the Dinos and the Wesmen can't slip further than sixth in the conference.

Ethan Duncan had 13 kills on 30 swings with only three errors to lead the Wesmen, who also got 12 kills from Daniel Thiessen

Thiessen added three aces, three block assists and eight digs, and Duncan had eight digs.

Setter Mikael Clegg had five kills with no errors on seven attacks and added a team-high 10 digs. Liam Kristjanson also had an effective night with eight kills on 13 swings with no errors.

Mount Royal (8-13), which clinched the final playoff spot in the conference thanks to Manitoba's Friday-night loss to Saskatchewan, got 14 kills apiece from Chris Byam and Trent Mounter.

The two teams will close the conference season Saturday with first serve at 6 p.m. CT. The match can be seen live on canadawest.tv brough to you by Co-Op.
