Box Score CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen will have to work one more day in hopes of pulling off a first-round upset.
The Wesmen men's volleyball team forced a fifth set but couldn't close out the Mount Royal Cougars, losing 3-2 (21-25, 28-26, 25-21, 20-25, 15-9) in Match 2 of their Canada West quarter-final series Saturday night at Kenyon Court.
The No. 7-seed Wesmen had won Match 1 a night earlier and were looking to end the best-of-three series but instead will now play a decisive third match at 4 p.m. CT with the winners going on to the Canada West semifinal.
The Wesmen forced a fifth set thanks to a 5-1 scoring run late in the fourth that extended a 20-19 lead to a 25-20 win.
In the second set, the Wesmen fought off two set points at 24-22 winning three straight points and had another set point of their own at 26-25 but couldn't finish it off.
Isaiah Olfert led the Wesmen with 15 kills, a match-high five aces and eight digs.
Nigel Nielsen had a team-high 16 kills, and
Liam Kristjanson and
Jaxon Rose both had 10.
The Cougars, the 2-seed, got a match-high 24 kills from Chris Byam. Jacob Van geel notched 13 and Max Haronga had 12.
