Adding more points to her career total has earned Jazmyn Castro the first Wesmen athlete of the week award for 2023-24.
Castro, a third-year midfielder on the Wesmen women's soccer team, has been named the Week 1 Birchwood Auto Group female athlete of the week after the Wesmen opened their season on the road over the weekend.
Castro, who led the team with three goals and five points last season, scored the team's first goal of the season Saturday in a 3-2 loss at Lethbridge.
The Pronghorns believed they had scored the game's first goal when they finished a set piece but the flag was up. As the Lethbridge players celebrated, Wesmen keeper Madison Priebe recognized the infraction immediately and put the ball back in play, spotting Castro near half waving her hand for attention. Castro was sprung free with the centre line playing her onside, she sprinted the 40-or-so yards alone and finished the sequence with her fourth career goal.
Castro finished the weekend with a team-high three shots and two on goal.
The team is back in Winnipeg to play the MacEwan Griffins Saturday (3 p.m.). That match, due to scheduling conflicts, will be played at the U of M Turf Field. The Wesmen then host Alberta on Sunday (12 p.m.) at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
