Picking up where he left off last season, Mikhail Mikhailov has been named the Birchwood Auto Group Wesmen male athlete of the week.
Mikhailov, a third-year forward on the men's basketball team, put up two strong efforts in Regina on the weekend as the Wesmen made their 2023-24 debut after going to the national tournament a season ago.
On Friday Mikhailov, who finished last season with seven double-doubles in the second half of the season and averaged 18 and 10 on 64 per cent shooting from January on, scored a game-high 26 points with 11 rebounds as the Wesmen routed the host Cougars, 89-69. The following night, Mikhailov scored 18 points with six rebounds in an 82-57 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.Â
On the weekend, the Madrid, Spain, native shot 61 per cent (19-for-31) from the field.
The Wesmen continue their non-conference season with a pair of games against OUA opponents this week. They will face Lakehead on Thursday and McMaster on Friday at U of M's four-team tournament.
