In leading his team to a major weekend win, Shawn Maranan has been named the Birchwood Auto Group Wesmen male athlete of the week.

Maranan, a fourth-year guard with the Wesmen men's basketball team, scored a season-high 17 points and a season-high 12 assists to lead the then-No. 8-ranked Wesmen to an 84-78 win over the then third-ranked UBC Thunderbirds at the Duckworth Centre.

Maranan's 12 assists were one off a career-high.

Maranan also had a season-high four steals, also one off his career-high as the Wesmen improved to 3-1 and moved up to No. 5 in the national rankings this week.

The Wesmen take on the Pronghorns in Lethbridge this weekend with games on Canada West TV.
