Playing a key role in helping her team to its first win of the season has earned Olivia Martin the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Wesmen Athlete of the Week.Â
Martin, a fifth-year defender on the Wesmen women's soccer team, scored her first career goal Saturday as the Wesmen defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-2.
And to add to her memorable day, Martin went and did it again as the Wesmen scored four times in a game for the first time since 2017.Â
Martin notched the match's first goal less than four minutes in and added her second in the 56th minute to help Winnipeg avenge a 3-1 loss in Lethbridge earlier this season and snap a nine-match winless streak to the Horns that dated back to 2014.
Martin's first goal came in the fourth minute when a corner from Jazmyn Castro bounced around the six-yard box and eventually fell to her feet before she first-timed it past U of L keeper Oceane McBurney. Her second goal rounded out Winnipeg's scoring and was another right-place, right-time tally.
Castro looped a corner into the box and Mariam Hashmi got a head on it pushing it towards goal. McBurney collided with a teammate in the air and the ball squirted to the left post, bounced off and right on to the foot of Martin, who merely had to tap it in to make it 4-1.
