Wesmen Pick Up First Win Of Season

Box Score

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Soccer team picked up their first win of the 2015 Canada West regular season with a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon against the Regina Cougars in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Match Boxscore

First year midfield Tyler Johnson scored her first CIS goal in the 10th minute. Fifth year midfield Danielle Bulloch notched her second goal of the season in the 26th minute.

Regina controlled possession for most of the early part of the game but it was Winnipeg that opened the scoring in the 10th minute. A cross from Danielle Comeau found Tyler Johnson, who gathered the pass and slid a low shot past Kacey McFee for her first goal of the season.

Despite the home team's relentless pressure and ball control, Winnipeg struck again before the Cougars could get on the board. Johnson sent a long cross in towards the net and it found its way to Danielle Bulloch. Bulloch tipped the ball around McFee and in to give the Wesmen a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars would find the net in the 38th minute, after Daniela Castro was taken down in the box. Castro stepped to the penalty spot and put a high shot past Justina Jarmoszko into the top corner, drawing the Cougars within a goal.

Regina continued it's  pressure into the second half, but could not beat Jarmoszko to even the score. The best chance for the Cougars came in the 60th minute when Shayla Kapila launched a shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar and bounced out.

The Cougars drew a foul call in the 90th minute and had a chance to tie it up, but Jarmoszko made a nice play to come out of her net and catch Kayla McDonald's cross attempt.

Jarmoszko stopped five shots in goal for Winnipeg while McFee made four saves for Regina.

Winnipeg (1-2) will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
