SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Saskatoon's Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.
The win moves the Huskies to 6-3-2 in the women's soccer standings, while Winnipeg drops to 2-6-3. Both teams have three matches remaining in the season.
Winnipeg is still battling with the Regina Cougars and Lethbridge Pronghorns for one of the six playoff spots in the conference's prairie division.
The Huskies scored two quick goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead.
Jessica Bradford opened the scoring in the 31st minute on a broken play. She was able to get the foot on the ball sending it by Winnipeg keeper Taylor Thorkelsson into the bottom left side of the net. Rebecca Weckworth tallied just four minutes later. Her header popped into the net in the 35th minute on ball by Erica Hindmarsh.
Kalli Cowles added the insurance goal for the Huskies. She bent the ball into the Winnipeg net on a corner kick in the 82nd minute.
Huskie keeper Kyleigh Vause made two saves in the match, while Thorkelsson stopped seven at the other end of the pitch for Winnipeg.
The Huskies will meet the Manitoba Bisons Sunday afternoon, while Winnipeg will travel to face the Regina Cougars.
