Winnipeg Picks Up Big Road Win In Regina

Box Score
Files from Univeersity of Regina Sports Information
REGINA, Sask. -  A goal by Winnipeg's Jamila Calvez in the 75th minute stood as the only scoring of the contest as the Wesmen took a 1-0 victory over the Regina Cougars in a rainy Canada West match on Sunday at the U of R Field.

Calvez's goal came after she applied pressure to the Regina back line, blocking an attempted clearance. The ball bounced near the top of the box, and Calvez was able to chip it over Regina keeper Ashton Lowry for her fourth goal of the season.

The victory by Winnipeg pulls the Wesmen level with the Cougars in the Prairie Division standings with identical 3-6-3 records. Manitoba also has a 3-6-3 record for a three-way tie for fourth place, with Lethbridge (3-7-2) one point behind and Mount Royal (2-6-4) two points back as the five teams battle it out for the final three playoff spots in the division.

Winnipeg keeper Taylor Thorkelsson made six saves to secure her fourth clean sheet of the Canada West schedule.

In the first half, the best chance for either team came in the 29th minute after a through ball by Regina's Karlee Vorrieter deflected off a Winnipeg defender, but right to Sydney Langen for a clear breakaway. Langen rifled a shot from the top of the box that beat Thorkelsson, but rang off the cross bar.

The U of R had a pair of quality chances within a three-minute span midway through the second half. A shot by Vorrieter went just high in the 60th minute, and in the 64th  minute Langen created a nice chance for Shayla Kapila on the right but her shot was saved by a nicely positioned Thorkelsson.

After Calvez's goal, the best chance for the Cougars came in the 89th minute after a long free kick sent in by Racquel Marshall. Taeganne Galger's header hit the cross bar, and Lauren Petras had an opportunity off the rebound but sent a header just over the bar.

Winnipeg closes out conference play next weekend at home against Pacific Division foes UBC (5-3-4) and Victoria (5-3-3).
