Wesmen, Vikes Battle To Scoreless Draw

Box Score

WINNIPEG - In a game more important to the Wesmen than the Vikes, The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and The University of Victoria Vikes battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg with the tie improves their record to 3-6-4, 13 points - currently tied with Mount Royal for 5th place in the Prairie Division. The Wesmen are one point up on Manitoba and two points ahead of Lethbridge. Victoria, already with a playoff spot secured in the Pacific Division improves their record to 5-4-4.

The Vikes had 15 total shots in the contest, compared to three for the Wesmen. Winnipeg goalkeeper Taylor Thorkelsson made 10 saves while Vikes goalkeeper Puck Louwes was called upon to make one save.

The opening 10 minutes of the match saw neither team being able to sustain any offensive pressure.  Victoria had the best chance to score in the 14th minute as third year midfielder Caitlin Millham let go a shot from outside the goal area but Thorkelsson made a great save to keep the match scoreless.

The rest of the half was a battle of field position until late in the half when the Vikes kept the play in the Wesmen end of the pitch but were unable to find the net.

In the second half, the Vikes kept the pressure on the Wesmen but Thorkelsson made all six saves that came her way to preserve the tie.

The teams will wrap up regular season play on Sunday. Winnipeg will take on the UBC Thunderbirds at 11:00 a.m. at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. Victoria will take on the Manitoba Bisons.
