EDMONTON - The University of Alberta Pandas and Winnipeg Wesmen battled to a 0-0 draw, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field. Cassie Bazzarelli made a save on the lone Winnipeg shot on goal, while Taylor Thorkelsson stopped all 11 shots she faced as both women earned the clean sheet.

Alberta, coming off a 2-0 win in their season-opening match earlier in the week, picked up right were they left off, controlling the ball early in the match. With a strong tail wind, Alberta pressured the Wesmen in their own half, firing nine first half shots, and garnering five first half corner kicks.

All of their first half chances, however, were turned aside by Thorkelsson, including a great chance by first-year Panda Madison Szfranski, whose strike from eight yards out was turned aside easily.

The Wesmen, who were also coming off a dominating 4-0 victory in their first match against UNBC, were unable to amount any offence with the strong with against them, finishing the first half with just two shots.

Alberta continued their strong play in the second half, as substitute Kristen Livingstone had four great looks on goal after coming into the match, but was unable to get a ball behind Thorkelsson. Sydney Daines, who recorded her first CIS point in the Pandas opening match, also showed off her offensive flair in the final 45, but her two shots sailed wide of goal, while her pass into Aly Parth was once again turned aside but Thorkelsson.

Maeghan Lindsay, who was responsible for two of Winnipeg's four goals entering Sunday, fired the lone shot on goal for the Wesmen in the 73rd minute, but her strike from 18 yards out found the waiting arms of Bazzarelli.

Despite outshooting Winnipeg 21-3 over the course of the full 90 minutes, Alberta was unable to find a goal late in regulation, earning the scoreless draw.

Alberta, now 1-0-1, will head on the road for the first time this season next week, as they pay a visit to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, and UBC Okanagan Heat. Winnipeg, also 1-0-1, will head back home for meetings against the Regina Cougars, and Saskatchewan Huskies.
