Pronghorns Defeat Wesmen 4-1

Box Score

Files by Lethbridge Pronghorns Sports Information

Lethbridge – In the second game of a road trip, the Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 4-1 Sunday afternoon in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Naomi Perkins, Kayla Blacquiere, Nanami Wakayama and Jesse Dueck scored for the Pronghorns, while Rachel Dunsmore replied for the Wesmen.

The win improves the 'Horns record to 2-4-0 on the season and the Wesmen fall to 1-4-1.

In the 14th minute the 'Horns opened the scoring. Nanami Wakayama played a nice ball through the Wesmen defence to an on-running Perkins, who slid the ball through Wesmen keeper Taylor Thorkelsson's legs for her first Canada West goal.

Winnipeg looked to equalize the game in the 21st minute but Paige Gattafoni made a spectacular diving save off Nicole Seavers from 20-yards out.

After having many good scoring chances yesterday, Blacquiere used her speed to outrun the Wesmen defenders and scored her second goal of the season, off the post and in to double the 'Horns lead.

Before the half was up, the Wesmen would cut that lead in half. Gattafoni raced off her line to stop Wesmen leading goal scorer Jamila Calvez, but she only got a piece of the shot and Rachel Dunsmore had a tap-in for her first of the season.

At the break the 'Horns registered six shots on goal, while the Wesmen had five.

Less than five minutes into the second half, the 'Horns regained their two-goal cushion. Raeleen Vanden Dungen's cross into the penalty area was left by Blacquiere for Wakayama and she looped a shot over Thorkelsson for her first Canada West goal.

Looking to expand their lead, Pronghorn leading goal scorer Nikki Furukawa hit a great long range shot but she could not beat the post.

However, the 'Horns did widen their lead to three off a corner kick. Blacquiere swung the corner into the box, finding the head of Jesse Dueck at the back post to close out the scoring.

The 'Horns will head out on the road next weekend, travelling to face the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies. The Wesmen will host the MacEwan Griffins and Mount Royal Cougars in their next action
