Wesmen can't slow high-powered Griffins

Box Score

Taryn Raabe made a career-high 13 saves, but the Winnipeg Wesmen women's soccer team was unable to get a result against one of the top teams in the Canada West conference.

Salma Kamel scored two goals and two MacEwan Griffins keepers combined on a clean sheet as the hosts earned a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon in Edmonton.

Kamel scored in the 13th and 69th minutes for the Griffins (5-1-2) took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Sofia DiGiacomo (19') and Meagan Lemoine (71') also had goals for the Griffins, who sit atop the Prairie Division.

The Wesmen (1-8) remain a point out of a playoff spot in the Prairie Division with five games to play, including three of their final four in Winnipeg.

"I think we went into this knowing we'd have to be defensively disciplined and I thought we were," Wesmen head coach Amy Anderson said. "I thought we played a lot better from last week and I thought we were better at things we were working on. If we keep our defensive shape, we're hoping to get results as we go."

The Wesmen stay in Edmonton one more day to take on the Alberta Pandas (4-1-3) at 1 p.m. CT Sunday.
