WSOC | Schneider scores as Wesmen earn another point

Box Score

DAVID LARKINS, Wesmen Athletics

REGINA — The Winnipeg Wesmen were just minutes away from their first win of the season, but nonetheless take a point out of their first road trip of the season.

The Wesmen scored early but Kyra Vibert's goal in the 82nd minute equalized and the UWinnipeg women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 Canada West conference draw Saturday afternoon.

The draw moved Winnipeg's record to 0-1-2 on the season while Regina went to 1-1-1 in its conference home-opener.

The Wesmen opened the scoring in the eighth minute when a Madisyn Furber through-ball from 25 yards out fell to the foot of Karrisa Schneider who chipped over Regina keeper Allyson Ford for her first career Canada West goal. It was also the first career assist for Furber, who spent her freshman year as a back-up keeper in 2019.

Keeper Taryn Raabe, who made nine saves on the day, ultimately helped preserve a point with a stop in the 75th minute after Vibert was sprung free with a long ball that originated in the Regina defensive third.

Seven minutes later, however, Vibert struck and helped the Cougars earn their fourth point of the season.

"I'm pleased. It was a tough game. Regnia came at us, and we did well to score," Wesmen head coach Amy Anderson said. "We obviously want to get the three points, but I think we did well to get the point all things considered and being on the road."

"I thought we crashed the 18 (yard box) better, and the girls did well with incorporating things we worked on this week, and that's how we scored. I thought we moved the ball and kept better possession."

Ford made five saves in the Cougars goal.

Jazmyn Castro had a career-high three shots, one on goal, to lead the Wesmen while playing all 90 minutes.

Winnipeg finished with 10 shots, six on target, while Regina had 14 and 10.

The Cougars earned 10 corners to Winnipeg's four.

The teams close out the weekend series with a 1 p.m. CT kickoff on Sunday.
