Box Score DAVID LARKINS, Wesmen Athletics
For the first time this season, the Winnipeg Wesmen were unable to gain a point out of a weekend series.
The Manitoba Bisons were granted a penalty kick just moments into the second half and Jessica Tsai converted to give the visitors a 1-0 win in a Canada West conference women's soccer match Saturday at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
Tsai was granted the kick from the spot after Wesmen keeper Taryn Raabe knocked Manitoba's Nicole Davis down in a race for an open ball.
It was Tsai's second goal of the season.
"I'm super proud of the way we came back today," Wesmen head coach Amy Anderson said after her team was much more competitive following a 5-1 loss on Thursday. "We played hard, we played well. I couldn't ask anything more defensively. To have a quick turnaround to how we were on Thursday is promising."
The Wesmen were left wondering where their chance from the spot was after freshman Sydney Arnold was kicked in the throat inside the 18 by a Bison player on a corner kick late in the game. No call was made.
Raabe was tremendous all day and finished the day with saves. She currently leads the country in that category.
Karina Bagi made one save in the Bisons goal for her fourth win of the season.
Manitoba improved to 3-3-0 while the Wesmen fell to 0-4-2.
The Wesmen are back on the road Oct. 1-2 in Saskatoon taking on the Saskatchewan Huskies.
They'll return home for a three-game stretch to close out the home portion of their schedule with games Oct. 16, 17 and 21.
