MINOT, N.D. —
Brianna Machado put the Wesmen in the win column Tuesday afternoon.
Machado, a second-year forward on the UWinnipeg women's soccer team, scored her first goal as a Wesmen to lift the team to a 1-0 win over the NCAA Division II Minot State Beavers on a scorching hot day in North Dakota.
The teams played a modified match with two 40-minute halves and no time added on.
Approximately 38 minutes into the second half, an errant pass from the Beavers found itself at the feet of Machado who was alone in space on the right side of the pitch. She took a couple of steps and fired a shot from 20 yards out that got over the head of keeper Maddie Elliott, who had strayed off her line.
Madison Priebe earned the clean sheet with four saves in the Wesmen goal. Winnipeg managed 11 shots, seven on goal.
The Wesmen are now 1-1-1 in non-conference play and will move on to play the NCAA Division II Mary Marauders in Bismarck, N.D. on Wednesday.
The Beavers were recently voted sixth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference pre-season coaches poll, while the Marauders were voted fifth in the poll of the league's 15 head coaches.
The Wesmen are just over a week away from beginning Canada West conference play. They open the season at Lethbridge and Calgary, Aug. 26 and 27.
