Box Score LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — A pair of second-half goals put a damper on the Winnipeg Wesmen season debut Saturday.
Lucy Mundy's goal in the 54th minute and Tory Clements' winner that followed four minutes later soured a match that had promising possibilities as the Lethbridge Pronghorns scored a 3-2 victory over the Wesmen in the Canada West women's soccer opener for both teams.
The Wesmen carried a 2-1 lead into the second half on the strength of first-half goals from
Jazmyn Castro and
Madisyn Furber.
Furber notched in the 32nd minute after Castro created a turnover just inside the Pronghorns half. Castro's counter pushed the Lethbridge defenders back as Furber ran free to her left. Castro fed her teammate and Furber took a couple of steps before beating Bridie Harding to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead.
Castro's goal came just a few minutes into the match and shrouded in confusion.
The Pronghorns believed they had scored the game's first goal when they finished a set piece and scored past Wesmen keeper
Madison Priebe. The flag was clearly up, however, for an offside, but the Lethbridge players celebrated nonetheless. Priebe recognized the infraction immediately and, while the Pronghorns celebrated unwittingly, put the ball back in play, spotting Castro near half waving her hand for attention. Lethbridge's players had all joined in on the celebration and Castro was sprung free with the centre line playing her onside. She sprinted the 40-or-so yards alone and finished the sequence with her fourth career goal.
Rylie Mooney, in the seventh minute, also scored for the Pronghorns, who are coached by former Wesmen assistant Thiago Bastos.
Winnipeg (0-0-1) will move on to Calgary to play the Dinos Sunday (12 p.m.,
canadawest.tv), the second straight season they'll play Calgary on the road.
Lethbridge (1-0-0) hosts Manitoba.
The Wesmen host their home-opening weekend Sept. 2-3 when they play MacEwan (at U of M Turf Field) and Alberta (Ralph Cantafio Field 2).
