Box Score The University of Winnipeg Wesmen made it a perfect weekend. Winnipeg defeated the University of Regina Cougars 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) Saturday afternoon to complete a weekend sweep.
The Wesmen (6-10) defeated the Cougars (1-15) in straight sets Friday evening in the series opener.
Second year outside hitter Alex Rose and fifth year hitter Tia Boroski led the Wesmen attack with eight kills each. Fourth year middle Chelsea Jones added six kills and four blocks. Libero Sonia Rossy led the team in digs with 13. Setter Jayme Menzies had 28 assists and three blocks.
Diana Lumbala led the Cougars with a match high nine kills. Tori Glynn added eight. Taylor Ungar dug up a match high 16 digs.
Strong serving and solid defensive play in the opening stages of the first set paced Winnipeg to a 9-3 lead forcing the Cougars to take an early timeout. Winnipeg continued their solid play and built a 16-8 lead at the technical timeout. Jayme Menzies shut the door on the Cougars with two key blocks in the final stages of the set, eventually won by the Wesmen by a 25-17 margin.
Winnipeg carried their momentum into the second set building an early 7-2 lead before going into the timeout with a 16-13 lead. Winnipeg went on to win the second set 25-18 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, Regina found their game and had the Wesmen back on their heels leading 10-7. Things went downhill for the Cougars soon after as Winnipeg went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-10 lead at the midway point of the set. After the Wesmen took a 16-12 lead into the technical break, there was no stopping the home side as they closed out the match winning the third set 25-17.
Winnipeg will have the bye in their schedule next week and will return to action on Thursday, January 28th at home against Brandon. Regina will be at home against Thompson Rivers.
