Box Score The MacEwan University Griffins women's volleyball team picked up a weekend split after posting a 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-8) victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen at the MacEwan University City Centre Campus Gymnasium in Edmonton, Alberta.
Winnipeg won the opening match of the weekend series Friday night in a four set affair.
The Griffins improve their Canada West regular season record to 4-10. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 4-10.
MacEwan University came out with a renewed determination after coming off yesterday's tough 3-1 loss to Winnipeg in the first night back after the holiday break. A strong first set went in favour of the home team (25-19), while the second saw the Wesmen push back for their only set win of the night by a margin of 25-22.
The third set was marked with long rallies and competitive grit by both teams, which powered the MacEwan University momentum into the fourth set. A series of Wesmen errors, compounded by an early seven-point run by the Griffins pushed the home team towards the finish line to end the set 25-8, winning the match in four sets.
Cassidy Kinsella led the Griffins with a match high 16 kills. Kate Rozendaal added 13. Karly Edgar led the Griffins in digs with a match high 32.
Winnipeg was led by Tia Boroski's 13 kills and 16 digs. Alex Rose added 11 kills. Sonia Rossy had a team high 19 defensive digs. Setter Jayme Menzies had 34 assists and five blocks.
The Wesmen will be back on home court next Friday and Saturday against the University of Regina Cougars.
