Wesmen Give Dinos All They Could Handle In Five Set Loss

Box Score

Files from University of Calgary Dinos Sports Information

The Dinos played their second of two matches this weekend against the Winnipeg Wesmen, in a much closer match then the first, final was a 3-2 win for the Dinos, (25-23, 21-25, 27-29, 25-16, 15-11)

Pexman continued her dominate weekend by putting up 5 kills in the early stages of the first set, catapulting the Dinos to an eight three lead, she continued the trend surpassing her number of kills from last match in the first set alone. The Wesmen pushed to bring it back to a one-point game late in the set but could complete the comeback thanks to Jaylynn Moffatt who was a brick wall in front of the net, posting 7 blocks on the night. The Dinos would go on to take the set 25 to 23

The second set was close down to the final few points, but was challenging for the Dinos' outside hitters as they couldn't seem to crack Winnipeg's Libero Madison Fyvie as she stopped their attacks with 13 digs in the set. Couple that with the offensive break out of Karissa Kuhr and Jessica Friesen who had nine and five kills on the set respectively. The Wesmen would go on to win their first set in four games.

After a slow start to the third set, the Dinos made a sub on Hannah Tanasichuk and Lexis Peart who made an instant impact, followed by back to back kills by Pexman to give the Dinos their first lead of the set. They kept it close but were eventually beaten by Winnipeg's offensive depth, by a score of 29 to 27
The fourth set was ultimately decided by the Dinos patience, and defence. Moffatt put up seven blocks on the match, including back to back blocks leading to a 14-10 lead for the Dinos. Out side hitter Laura McManes was a force in the set, throwing down 3 kills, and putting up the final point in the 25-16 win.

The final set was started by Pexman's 20th kill of the match, and multiple errors by the Wesmen giving the Dinos an early lead in the final set. The Dinos would hold the lead through out the set, and add a duo of blocks from starting setter Leah Shevkenek to bring them to the win off of a service error by Winnipeg, by a final score of 15-11.

Danika Picklyk led Winnipeg with 19 kills and added 12 digs. Alex Rose finished with 15 kills. Karissa Kuhr had 14 kills and 12 defensive digs. Setter Rylie Dickson had 64 assists.

The Wesmen (0-6) will have the week off in their schedule this weekend and will be back in action on November 25-26 in Edmonton against the Alberta Pandas.
