A wonderful solo effort has earned Sydney Butler the Birchwood Auto Group Wesmen female athlete of the week.

Butler, a third-year forward on the Wesmen women's soccer team, scored the go-ahead goal Saturday in Regina. 

After being sprung free on a through-ball in the 66th minute, Butler poked the ball past charging Regina keeper Kareena Anderson near the edge of the 18, stuck with the pursuit and managed to slide the ball underneath two diving Regina defenders into the back of the goal to give the Wesmen a 1-0 lead in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

It was Butler's second career goal. 

The Wesmen are back home for two matches Friday (7 p.m. vs UBC) and Saturday (7 p.m. vs UNBC) at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
