Tia Lecox scored the biggest goal of the season for the Winnipeg Wesmen and has been named the Birchwood Auto Group female athlete of the week.Â
Lecox, a third-year midfielder from Ottawa, scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute Sunday to lift the Wesmen women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Regina as the two teams played the final 45 minutes of a match that had been postponed on Aug. 27.Â
Lecox, who was subbed on 13 minutes prior, got her opportunity after a Regina handball more than 30 yards from goal. Lecox wasted no time in stepping up to the ball, catching Regina keeper Allyson Ford off her line and lofting a perfect strike over Ford's head, and narrowly underneath the bar, to give Winnipeg its first win of the season.Â
Lecox's goal was one of a number of firsts on the weekend for the Wesmen: Hasana Church and Sydney Arnold both scored their first career goals, Silvana Scaramuzzi registered her first career assist, and keeper Madison Priebe was credited with her first career victory.Â
