In helping the Wesmen put a ribbon on their finest record in Canada West history, Shawn Maranan has been named the MBLL Wesmen male athlete of the week.
Maranan, a fifth-year guard on the Wesmen men's basketball team, averaged 26 points over two road wins over the Lethbridge Pronghorns, which gave the Wesmen a 16-4 record in conference play. It is Winnipeg's highest win percentage since joining the Canada West (1999) and highest in program history since 1992-93 when the team went 10-2 in GPAC play.Â
In a convincing 101-78 win on Friday, Maranan had 19 points on 7-13 shooting with four assists and a steal.Â
The following night, he was one point off his career-high, dropping 33 points while scoring seven of the team's 15 points in overtime as the Wesmen held on to win.Â
Maranan shot 43.8 per cent from three for the weekend.
The Wesmen are on the road in Vancouver this weekend first to take on Mount Royal in a play-in game Friday night. Should they win, they will face UBC on Saturday.
