At least two people with ties to the Bisons got to celebrate a win Friday night. They just happened to be former Bisons.

Kalena Schulz had seven kills and Hallie Bujan added six against their former team as the Winnipeg Wesmen women's volleyball team pulled out the brooms in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-16) sweep of the Manitoba Bisons in a Canada West conference match at the Duckworth Centre. 

The win snapped a six-match losing streak to the Bisons and gave the Wesmen their first win over their closest rivals since February 2016.

Taylor Boughton had a team-high 10 kills and hit .231 as the Wesmen improved to 3-4. Ashleigh Laube had a team-high 15 digs and Emma Parker added 14. 

"Our backcourt was very good today on receive and on defence," Wesmen interim head coach Phil Hudson said. "The block did a good job reading the setter, we had not too many one-and-a-half blocks. We had either two or one and defended around them quite well."

Winnipeg hit .209 for the night and held Manitoba (3-4) to .106 attacking. 

Kearley Abbott led the Bisons with 12 kills and Julia Arnold had a match-high 25 digs.

"Winnipeg played a very good match, so I'll give them full credit," Bisons head coach Ken Bentley said. "After that first set, our compete level was pretty disappointing after that. 

"It's pretty simple: Our serve-receive wasn't very good and so they had the advantage on us throughout the second and third set. They out-passed us, so that was the difference there. They kept siding-out on us and we couldn't stop them."

The two teams meet again Saturday at the U of M.
