WVB | Efficient attack leads Wesmen to key road win

Box Score

KELOWNA, B.C. — With a back-up setter getting her first start of the season, the Winnipeg Wesmen unleashed one of their most potent offensive nights of the Canada West season.

Sophomore Mikaela Cameron had a career-high 40 assists and the Wesmen women's volleyball team hit a conference season-high .255 to drop the UBC-Okanagan Heat 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21) in a key conference battle Friday night.

Cameron was making her first start of the season in place of fifth-year setter Rylie Dickson, who is unavailable this weekend due to an academic commitment. She also added a match-high and career-high 11 digs, along with four block assists and a solo block.

Emma Parker led the way with 15 kills on 35 swings while adding nine digs for the Wesmen, who have won three of their last four conference matches. Taylor Boughton had five kills on eight swings with one error plus four block assists.

The win moved the Wesmen to 7-8 on the season while UBCO fell to 5-8 as the two teams battle with UBC for the final two playoff positions in the conference.

The win was the program's first road win outside the province since a victory at MacEwan Jan. 8, 2016 and the team's win total is its most since 2015-16 when they won eight matches.

"The teams weren't on top of their game to start with and as the match went on it got better and both teams served really well," Wesmen head coach Phil Hudson said. "It basically came down to first contact and we passed maybe a little bit better tonight, that was the difference. They're a very good team though. I'm sure they're gonna come back tomorrow morning ready to get themselves a win. Pretty good win for us and very proud of our girls."

UBCO was led by Hellen Lacava's 10 kills and 13 digs, while Claudia Corneil led the way defensively with a match-high 15 digs.
